Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine prioritize Club members’ academic success by providing after school and summer programs to elementary, middle, and high school students. We work to ensure Club members stay on track to graduate from high school and leave our Clubs with a plan for their future. Our programs include homework help, tutoring, STEM programs, coding, and career and college exploration, and preparation.
Programming varies from Club to Club and throughout the year. For more information, contact Erin Giwer, Senior Program Director, at egiwer@bgcmaine.org.
With our Academic Success programs, members embrace their curiosity, actively engage in their education, and acquire a lifelong love of learning.
Brain Gain, our learning loss prevention program, consists of one-week modules with fun, themed activities that are designed to help curb summer learning loss. This data-driven program is proven to help children and teens stay on track with reading and literacy during summer. Brain Gain is available for elementary, middle, and high school students.
Our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics-based programs are tailored to elementary, middle, and high school age groups. Curriculum includes an introduction to coding, LEGO robotics, science lab, and more. Additional STEM opportunities are available for youth who want to develop their STEM skills in more hands-on activities, such as advanced Lego league, coding, and more!
The Power Hour program helps kids and teens improve academically by providing dedicated time after school to focus on homework. Members receive help with assignments either one on one or in a small group setting. Volunteers and staff offer tutoring in general subjects and provide access to on-line learning platforms for reading, math, and languages. Power Hour helps elementary, middle, and high school students stay on track with their learning and get the additional support they need to succeed academically and as they enter the workforce and higher-education.
Book Clubs allow participants to practice speaking and listening skills through informal group discussions about a book, build friendships through the connectedness of experiencing a common text, and engage in critical thinking debates surrounding events in the story.
Our college readiness program guides middle and high school Club members as they work toward graduation and prepare for post-secondary education and career success. Juniors and seniors participate in SAT prep, college application assistance, career counseling, and college and trade school campus visits.
At BGCSM, we know that every child and teen can thrive in school. Youth experiencing poverty are at a higher risk of not graduating on time than their peers. That’s why we offer all our programs for only $5 a year to allow everyone the tools they need to find their love for learning and succeed. Supporting BGCSM means more students can discover a passion for learning.
