Portland, Maine – October 27, 2025,

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine is thrilled to announce a transformative $2.5M gift from Jerome (Jerry) and Pamela Bruni of Colorado Springs, Colorado, in honor of Jerry’s parents, James and Hilla Bruni, longtime residents of Portland. This contribution is the lead gift to BGCSM’s “A Place for Growth” capital campaign to fund the future renovation and expansion of the organization’s Portland Clubhouse and campus on Cumberland Avenue. The expansion plans include a 13,000 square foot addition to the Portland Clubhouse designed to serve teens and young adults, which will be named the James and Hilla Bruni Bridge to Success Center.

Jerry and Pam Bruni’s transformative gift to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine is rooted in a story that began almost 100 years ago, when Jerry’s father, James Bruni, first walked through the doors of what was then the Boys Club in Portland. As a teenager, James found in the Club a place of encouragement, belonging, and purpose—qualities that would shape his life’s trajectory. The Club’s mentors not only offered him recreation and camaraderie but also instilled self-confidence and a belief in his own potential.

As an adult, James volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club in Portland for as long as he was able. In 1975 he was named the club’s ‘Man of the Year’ for his volunteer work. His devotion to helping young people was part of the fabric of his life, and his son Jerry grew up watching him lead, teach, and guide with quiet determination.

James Bruni was born in Portland to Italian immigrants. He graduated from Portland High School and worked for the Railway Express Agency and the Maine Central Railroad. He met Hilla Gorwalla in India while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. In the 1970’s, Hilla worked as a legal secretary for the law firm Bernstein Shur in Portland.

“The connection with my father, the connection with youth, the connection with advancement and development to become productive and working members of society—those were at the top of our motivations to give this gift,” Jerry reflects.

Jerry and Pam see that their gift will enable more than just a building. They see the Club’s future campus as a bridge that will connect the generosity of past generations with the aspirations of the next, ensuring that young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, have access to skills training and relationships that will open doors to opportunity.

Jerry says, “You can change the trajectory of the lives of young people by showing them caring, concerned adults who have nothing to gain but the joy of seeing people succeed.”

“Jerry and Pam’s generosity reflects the very best of our community,” says Brian Elowe, CEO. “Their belief in the potential of young people is exactly what makes this project possible. Their investment is not only in a building—it’s in the lives of kids and teens who will grow here, learn here, and thrive here for generations.”

The James and Hilla Bruni Bridge to Success Center will add capacity to the existing Portland campus on Cumberland Avenue, doubling daily attendance to 500 members. The new center will feature specially designed spaces for teens to access not only traditional programs in academics, arts, leadership and health & wellness, but also three large “garage bays” for hands-on training in the trades. BGCSM will continue to support elementary and middle school members in the renovated Clubhouse. With this project, BGCSM will stay true to its core mission while ensuring access to world-class facilities, equipment and staff that will prepare and propel our teen and young adult members into the workforce, contributing to Maine’s communities.

The new center will carry forward James and Hilla Bruni’s legacy of lifting others up, offering a place where encouragement leads to curiosity, curiosity leads to skills, and skills lead to a lifetime of contributing to the community. Jerry and Pam hope their gift will inspire others to see the profound ripple effect that one act of generosity can have by not only transforming individual lives but also by strengthening the entire community for generations to come.

On February 28th, the Maine Celtics and Sun Life came to our Portland Club to throw the Fit to Win Program. This program is a youth focused healthy living program that encourages kids to be physically active and maintain proper nutrition. Each of our members participated in fitness exercises, dancing, journaling and smoothie making. In addition to all the stations, our kids left with water bottles, journals and dental hygiene kits. At the end of the session, our members filled out a survey and 87.3% our members feel ready to practice healthy habits after this event.

BGCSM CEO Brian Elowe recently sat down with Mainebiz Senior Writer, Renee Cordes, for The Day That Changed Everything Podcast. The series interviews business leaders about the transition during the first days of COVID and how companies shifted and changed. Unsurprisingly, Brian had much to share about BGCSM’s pandemic shifts and how the Club is planning for the future. After a career in risk management, Brian Elowe switched gears when he became CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine in March 2020. Brian talks about the path that led him to Maine, his transition to the nonprofit world, and what it was like to succeed as a longtime leader at the start of the pandemic.

Gorman Foundation. "An especially valuable aspect of this program is how children will not only benefit from the hours of high-quality programming, but their caregivers as well in receiving more time to secure what they need for themselves and their families. The John T. Gorman Foundation is proud to support this expansion and truly appreciates the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Maine for putting the pieces together so quickly to meet this challenge."

Since 1947, Youth of the Year has been Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Club members. Each year, Club teens are nominated by staff members to become Youth of the Year candidates. One exceptional young person from each Clubhouse rises to the role of Youth of the Year. State and National events are held. Youth of the Year serves as both an exemplary ambassador for Boys & Girls Club youth and as a strong voice for all of our nation’s young people.

BGCSM representatives chose ten finalists based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme, and overall impression. Public voting for the finalists was made available online throughout February. In addition, the finalists’ artworks were displayed at UScellular stores in Auburn, Scarborough, and Westbrook.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine is excited to announce a new Teen Center set to open this spring at the Lewiston Armory.

Coming this Spring: BGCSM Teen Center in the Lewiston Armory

We are excited to announce a new Teen Center set to open this spring at the Lewiston Armory. BGCSM recently signed a multi-year lease for the space with the City of Lewiston. This site will offer expanded teen programming for middle and high school students from both the Lewiston and Auburn communities.

Since 1995, we have operated a Clubhouse in Auburn, serving approximately 95 Auburn/Lewiston youth, ages 6-18, each year. Transportation for Lewiston residents has been a barrier to regular attendance at the Auburn Clubhouse and the facility cannot accommodate the growing number of teens interested in joining the Club. "For over 25 years, Boys & Girls Club has served Lewiston youth and teens at our location in Auburn. We are excited to continue this tradition of service by establishing a Teen Center at the Lewiston Armory. Together with our Auburn location, these two sites will allow us to increase the number of youth and teens we serve each day," says Gary Violette, Club Director.

           The Ideal Location

The Armory's location, next door to the middle school and on the bus route for the high school, is ideal for this initiative. Five rooms, over 1,600 square feet of program space, and use of the Armory gymnasium, will give ample room for diverse activities. "We are very excited to welcome Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine to the Lewiston Armory. Their goals and mission complement our vision for increased recreation access for the Lewiston community.” shares Nicole Welch, Recreation Director for the City of Lewiston.

The new BGCSM Lewiston Teen Center will provide 75 young adults with programs to support their academic success, arts, health & wellness, and leadership skills. Substance abuse prevention strategies, nutrition, and college readiness programs will also be offered. BGCSM is raising capital to renovate the space and hopes to open the program this spring. Healthy meals will be provided to all members daily. The Teen Center will operate five days a week from 2:00 pm-7:00 pm following the school calendar.

"We are thrilled to be serving the youth of Lewiston in a more accessible way. Our work in this community and our partnerships with organizations like Tree Street Youth, New Beginnings, Lewiston Rec, Long Creek, and the Career Center will ensure that this Teen Center equips tomorrow’s leaders with the tools they need as they enter adulthood," says Brian Elowe.

This February, BGCSM is joyfully celebrating Black History Month, recognizing the past and future contributions of Black people, especially our youth. When young people learn about Black icons and leaders, they’re inspired to dream big.

This year, UScellular introduced an exciting new element to the contest. For the first time, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine Members were encouraged to create their original artwork to recognize influential Black STEM icons, including historical figures, world leaders, scientists, and educators. Members were introduced to an array of Black scientists, Mathematicians, Engineers, and Astronauts who were leaders in their fields. After researching, members took what they had learned and created art that spoke to them. "This has been a great way to introduce new STEM leaders to our members and have them express what they've learned through their creativity,” shares Karen MacDonald, Chief Operations Officer.

UPDATED: COVID Guidelines for Club Parents and Guardians

In an effort to keep our Clubs safe for children, teens, staff, and volunteers, BGCSM is updating our COVID-19 guidelines.

           Dear Parents & Guardians,

The surge in COVID Omicron variant is widespread and affecting all aspects of daily life including at Boys & Girls Clubs. As we continue to navigate through this evolving pandemic, ensuring the health and safety of your children and our staff is our most critical priority. As such, we want to share updated guidelines with you.

           Daily Health & Wellness Screenings

We ask all parents/guardians to be sure your child(ren) can pass a daily wellness screening before attending the Club. As a secondary measure, a temp check will be performed on all youth and teens entering the Club. Any child with a temperature above 100 degrees will not be allowed to participate and their parent/guardian will be notified.

           Mask Mandate

A mask worn properly (tightly covering nose and mouth), is required throughout our facilities and transportation. N95, KN95, and KF94s are recommended by the CDC. Cloth masks are no longer recommended. Members and staff will double-mask when in the van and drivers will keep windows open to allow for increased airflow.

           Vaccines

Vaccines are required for all Boys & Girls Club staff and volunteers. We strongly encourage you and your child(ren) to get vaccinated for the safety of all in our Boys & Girls Club community. For more information on vaccinations, click here:

Finn is a bright and creative 7th grader currently attending Auburn Middle School. She has been an active BGCSM Auburn/Lewiston Club member for four years. Often the first person in the Club and the last to go home each evening, Finn says her favorite part of BGCSM is spending time with her friends, though she also enjoys the various art activities and baseball.

Finn, like many students, was faced with numerous challenges to her academic learning. Attending virtual classes at BGCSM and applying herself helped Finn to enter the 7th grade strong. She works hard to stay on top of her work and prioritizes school.

In Keystone Club, youth engage in activities focused on three areas: academic success, career preparation, and community service. With the guidance of an adult advisor, Keystone Clubs seek to positively impact members, the Club, and the community.

Member Moment: Eli

Meet Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine Member, Eli. At only 7 years old, Eli was named a national winner in the National BGCA Arts Contest in the Collage Category, ages 6-9. Donors and supporters of BGCSM make moments like these possible for our members.

This year, the supporters of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine came together and helped us build a fourth core program pillar: Arts. We have always worked the arts into our three program pillars, Academics, Leadership, and Health & Wellness, but realized that this crucial discipline needed special attention. Together with our family of donors, we reinvented our art programs to include an array of art classes ranging from painting, drawing, sculpting to dance, music, and theater for elementary, middle, and high school students to explore their creative talents. We believe every child and teen has the potential to be an artist. This fall, a Portland Club Member, showed us how right we are.

Boys & Girls Club National Art Contest

Each year, BGCSM joins thousands of Clubs across the country in the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Arts Contest, a comprehensive initiative promoting young peoples' creativity and encouraging artistic skills and cultural enrichment. BGCSM submitted 177 pieces of artwork created by our members, who range from ages 6-18. The pieces were screened at the regional level, and a limited number were selected for judging at the national level. This past August, regional winners were judged by professionally recognized artists virtually. Their decisions were difficult and resulted in only 33 National Fine Arts winners.

Member Moment: Mireille

Meet our Youth of the Year, Mireille Tona, whose leadership, confidence, and athletic dedication embody Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine's members.

For the past seven years, Mireille has been an outstanding member at the Boys & Girls Club. Mireille credits the Club for giving her the confidence she needed to recognize herself as a natural born leader. At the Club, she ran the Smart Girls Program and helped middle school girls develop essential skills like building good relationships, self-esteem, and wellness. Seeing younger girls look up to her has inspired her to always try and lead by example. At school, Mireille was Varsity Basketball Captain and a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. As a female athlete, Mireille uses the challenges many woman face of being undervalued as an opportunity to be a role model to younger girls. To do this, she encourages others to celebrate their differences and see how their skills can benefit their communities. She thanks the Club for the confidence she needed to become an inspiration to others.

During the pandemic, Mireille was in her senior year of High School. Feeling isolated and missing her Club connections, Mireille decided to volunteer at our Portland Clubhouse. Our Clubs were operating as remote learning sites for the Public schools. Mireille supported our youngest members in their on-line learning. Her commitment to the Clubs and kids made her a natural choice for Youth of the Year. Mireille was nominated for the Portland Clubhouse Youth of the Year and went on to win the state recognition.
2021 Juneteenth at Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine wrapped up their last weeks of spring programing by focusing on the upcoming holiday: Juneteenth. Still in our socially-distanced pods, kids learned the history and importance of this day. Program leaders have compiled resources used by our youth to share with you.

Juneteenth celebrates the historic day of June 19th, 1865 when the final slaves in America were notified that slavery had been banned and they were free. Juneteenth is still celebrated to this day and was recently declared a statewide holiday in Maine. Traditionally, this day is commemorated with parades, books and poetry readings, enjoying red colored foods like strawberries, red soda, and hotdogs, and reflecting on African American culture and history.

“Because we strive to help all our members become positive leaders, we work to emphasize the importance of social responsibility.” Says Baba Ly, Senior Program Director at Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine, “Celebrating Juneteenth at the clubs teaches our members to appreciate the great cultural contributions made by Black Americans.”

PORTLAND—Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine (BGCSM) will reopen their five Clubhouses in partnership with local school districts. BGCSM has signed a contract agreement with the Portland and South Portland school districts. Similar agreements are being discussed with the Auburn and Lewiston school systems.

“We are thrilled to be getting back to what we do best, supporting and engaging the kids in our community who need us most.” Says Brian Elowe, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine. BGCSM runs afterschool programs for area youth focused on academics, leadership, and healthy living. Historically, Clubs are open from 2:30 in the afternoon through the early evening and provide high quality programming, a safe place for kids to go, and a healthy snack and evening meal.

BGCSM will adjust their operating hours to align with the schools’ hybrid model. Clubhouses will re-open to serve as remote learning hubs offering academic support, technology resources, and safe spaces for members to complete schoolwork.

Each day, BGCSM will implement a schedule of youth development programs and activities to support the learning and social-emotional development of children Kindergarten through grade 5. Daily activities will include power hour-homework help, art, music, fitness, STEM, recreation, and wellness activities. Breakfast and lunches will be provided by the schools, and BGCSM will continue to provide evening “grab and go” meals.

“The Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine is our deeply valued partner, providing steadfast support to Portland Public Schools students, particularly those who need it most,” said Portland Public Schools Superintendent Xavier Botana. “This school year, BGC is providing multiple supports for PPS students and staff to assist in our return to school during the pandemic. BGC is not only providing after-school programming for some students but also full-day programming – with a curriculum developed to support student learning – for days when cohorts of students are learning remotely. BGC’s programming will ensure students get the academic support they need and free parents to return to work. Thank you, BGC, for all you do for our students!”

Maximum capacity at the Clubs will be limited to approximately 50% of normal attendance. The Clubs will mirror the schools’ cohort model. Members will attend the Clubs in two cohorts, two-three days each week, on their scheduled remote days from school. The South Portland Club will serve 100 students per week. The three Portland Club locations (Cumberland Avenue, Sagamore Village, and Riverton Park) will serve 140 students per week. The Auburn/Lewiston Club could serve an additional 80 members each week. Students will be grouped in pods of 10 and will remain with their pod throughout the program. BGCSM implemented COVID-19 safety procedures, facility, and policy updates including: handwashing and sanitizing stations, plexiglass dividers, signage, social distancing instructions, personal protective equipment resources, staff trainings, and daily check-in procedures. Enrollment is currently limited to youth in grades K-5. Engaging and supporting Middle School and High School students is a top priority for BGCSM. Plans are underway to expand capacity and programming to include these age groups as soon as possible.

“We are proud to be able to offer this remote learning opportunity to the families in our community. These partnerships with the schools allow us to be here for the kids who needs us most, and also support the great work that the schools and teachers are doing around navigating this unprecedented pandemic.” says Brian Elowe.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine has provided more than 16,000 meals to Club members and their families since the Clubs’ closure on March 16 due to the health crisis. In addition to continuing meal service this summer, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine ran a virtual interactive summer Clubhouse with 13 core programs utilizing a variety of on-line platforms. Classes included music, STEM, and summer reading. BGCSM anticipates a continuation of the Virtual Clubhouse in the coming weeks.

Hannaford Helps Boost Meal Delivery for BGCSM

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine has provided over 100,000 meals to Club members and their families since the Club’s closure on March 16th due to the health crisis. Hannaford's support will help even more!

More than 12,000 meals delivered since health crisis—with 5,000 more slated this summer

Hannaford Supermarkets donated $45,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine for the purchase a van to streamline meal delivery throughout Greater Portland.

“We are grateful that Hannaford helped fill a major gap in our food service operations,” said Brian Elowe, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine. “This dedicated van allows us to safely and efficiently deliver meals and milk for all three clubs in one trip—freeing up time so we can focus on youth development programs and not daily meal prep, service and delivery.”

Prior to the Hannaford-sponsored van, Club staff used their own vehicles to transport the food directly to the surrounding clubs in South Portland and Riverton Park and Sagamore Village in Portland. At times, the vans used to transport club members was instead used for meal delivery rendering the vans unavailable for club activities and staff unable to lead programs.

“It gives us great joy to know that the foods delivered in this van will not only provide nutrition but also offer comfort and help build community within the five club locations,” said Sherri Stevens, Community Relations manager for Hannaford. “We have invested in the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Maine for many years because we know they are helping to keep our young people safe, nourished, and thriving.”
