Fondly called
Billy by many who know him, Billy dedicated his life to
working with young people in the Greater Portland
communities including his 31 years at the Boys & Girls Clubs
of Southern Maine Portland Unit on Cumberland Avenue. Each
day Billy gave his time and special talents with a genuine
and sincere determination to make a positive difference in
the lives of each young person he worked with. Billy loved
sports both watching and coaching the kids, always
encouraging them to work hard to reach their full potential.
As Billy attends sporting events in the Portland area,
former Club members greet him with a smile as they remember
him from their times as a youth at the Boys & Girls Clubs. |

History of
Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine
 |
Boys
& Girls Clubs of Southern Maine
has a rich history.
The Portland Boys Club Association
was originally
founded
January 13,
1909.
|
| |
|
|
As the Club grew it moved from the
Seaman's Club to Plum Street .... and on to Cumberland Avenue.
|
 |
| |
|
 |
The
Portland Clubhouse opened
April 13, 1931 on Cumberland Avenue. Since that time, the
organization has grown to include three additional sites,
including South Portland, an affiliate Club in Auburn, and the
Riverton Extension. |
| |
|
|
Each year the Greater Portland Clubs serve an
increasing number of kids, many of whom come from
disadvantaged circumstances. |
 |
| |
|
 |
Today the Portland Clubhouse is "the" place to go if you're
researching the history of swimming in the area. This is
a photo of the Swim team as they go off to New York City where
they tie for 1st place in the Boys & Girls Clubs Nationals in
1951. |

|
Gymnastics,
you bet! Here is a photo of the boys way back in 1925. |
 |
At the administrative office in the Portland Clubhouse, we
receive numerous phone calls each year from alumnus of the Boys &
Girls Clubs and are reminded of the many great times children had
at the Club while growing up. It's hard to believe now, that
years ago children rode their sleds down the steep roads of Munjoy
Hill to the Clubhouse where they felt safe with friends, played
games, learned sports and grew up-all under the caring guidance of
dedicated staff. If you have a story to share with the
alumni association, we would love to hear from you. Call the
Club at 874-1069.
